When we lose a loved one, a job, or feel trapped between a rock and a hard place, it can feel lonely. Options that can help us move forward look dim, dimmer, and dimmest. When dealing with loss, it’s easy to play the victim. It’s easy to feel stuck.
When I started my recovery from my Last Bad Day, my options looked dim. Doctors told me I would have a lifetime of limitations. And despite all of the love and compassion from family and friends, there were many times when I felt alone. I felt stuck.
Luckily, I came around to accept that my accident could have been worse. I could have had a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. I could not have made it.
As crazy as it sounds, asking myself the question, “How could it be worse?” was a small gratitude shift. It helped me see what I still could do. It sparked my resiliency and belief that nothing changes until we do.
Last weekend, while listening to On Being with Krista Tippett, this life chapter came boomeranging back to me. Krista was interviewing Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. They recently released a book about resiliency called, Option B. During the interview, Adam spoke about the question I asked myself during my recovery.
We can escape our tough situations. But it takes a strong peloton and insightful questions to help us shift to a new perspective. It also requires the acknowledgment that it takes awareness, acceptance, action, and time.

On April 22nd, Michael died in a cycling accident. He was my dentist and a wonderful human being, husband, and father. It was a freak accident caused by his front tire blowing out. No cars or other cyclists were involved. His passing is a reminder to make today matter.
